There are quite a number of ways in making learning English fun for a non-English speaker. For teachers who have been finding ways on how to make those lessons interesting, knowing what your students truly like can help. In addition, there are also some other things which you can keep in mind to help those non-English speakers appreciate learning English even more.
Use the whiteboard/blackboard. Italy still works with traditional blackboards in most cases, though some schools have whiteboards. Draw a scene on the board and have students write sentences in their notebooks to describe it, or have them comment on it as speaking practice. Be sure the drawing can elicit the grammar and/or vocabulary in your lesson’s objective, and that it contains enough details to give each student a chance to cite something original. Make a rough copy of your drawing while you’re planning your lesson to be sure you can execute it on the board, and that you can draw it quickly while students are focused on another task.
Let me briefly discuss with you the importance of using correct English grammar in all your writing problems. By using good grammar you can make any of your English writing appealing to your readers. It would make your readers think that you are a professional writer though you think you are not. It will give you an edge or advantage when it comes to applying for a job especially when the job demands English writing. It is no doubt, if you are good at English, written or spoken, you get to be ahead of everyone that does not know or is not good in English. English is your bread and butter.
For English language teachers in Italy, it’s always a good idea to be cost-efficient with materials. Whether you work for yourself or for a school, conserving paper and other classroom resources makes teaching ESL less wasteful and more economical. Teachers also save time when they don’t have to copy and distribute handouts, and needn’t worry about forgetting materials or finding out too late that the photocopier needs repair.
Make use of dictation. Students in Italy have a particularly difficult time with English spelling, and short dictations are a good way to have them practice accuracy of common words. This exercise is also very valuable when teaching the possessive ”s”, plurals, personal pronouns and possessive adjectives. As a follow-up activity to review grammar, students can circle each instance of the verb ”to be”, underline each plural noun, etc.
When you are learning the English language, it is often the case that you have to change what you’ve already learned and the change can also be very fundamental that it is very difficult for many people. The difference in sentence and grammatical structure between English and other languages can prove to be very difficult for most people. Fortunately, English tutors have developed many tools to help people who are learning English have an easier time learning English.
